Deep Brain Reorienting
(DBR)
A newer addition to the subcortical therapeutic approaches and developed by Dr. Frank Corrigan and his team, DBR attunes to the protective shock energy that occurs nanoseconds before the emotional energy flooded the deep brain and overwhelm the nervous system. Furthermore, before processing the protective shock energy DBR anchors into the Orienting Tension - the sensations on a micro-level that tell the brainstem and the body to be on high alert. Following this sequence DBR can access previously overwhelming emotional pain that once may have caused distress or dissociation and begin processing and clearing that pain without overloading the nervous system. DBR works well for emotional pain that is both acute (e.g., one specific traumatic event) and chronic (e.g., a long-standing pattern of hurt or harm).
What happens during Deep Brain Reorienting Sessions?
With DBR, we start by "ground to the where self", which anchors you in the superior colliculus in the brain stem that helps direct attention, eye movements, and head movements. This allows us to slow down the survival responses - especially the different types of dissociation - in your nervous system so you can turn towards the activating stimuli and find the orienting tension. The orienting tension is the initial bracing that occurs (often in the forehead, around the eyes, or back of the neck) in an attempt to protect the body from potential danger. Then, by bringing your attention to specific sensations in the body we start to soften the protective shock energy and make space for you to attune to and process through the underlying emotional energy. With DBR, we can turn towards and begin to release the emotional pain that so often gets stuck in the nervous system - all without becoming overwhelmed.
